Dilated cardiomyopathy is characterized by the enlargement and weakening of the heart's main pumping chamber, the left ventricle. This structural change impairs the heart's ability to effectively pump blood throughout the body, leading to various symptoms such as persistent fatigue, shortness of breath even during mild exertion, swelling in the legs and ankles due to fluid retention (edema), and in severe cases, the development of heart failure. Managing dilated cardiomyopathy typically involves a multi-faceted approach that includes medications to improve heart function, regulate blood pressure, and control fluid buildup. Additionally, lifestyle modifications like adopting a heart-healthy diet low in sodium and saturated fats, engaging in regular physical activity as recommended by healthcare providers, quitting smoking, limiting alcohol intake, and managing stress are essential components of treatment. In advanced stages where conservative measures are insufficient, heart transplantation may be considered a life-saving option for restoring cardiac function and improving quality of life. Our heart works hard every day to keep blood pumping through our bodies, but sometimes things can go wrong. One example is a thrombus, which is just a fancy word for a blood clot that forms inside the heart for different reasons. In the left ventricle, for instance, a clot can make it challenging. If a piece of that clot breaks off, it can travel through the bloodstream and cause bigger issues, like a stroke. But clots aren’t the only things that can appear in the heart. Sometimes, tumors can form too. The most common one is called a myxoma. Luckily, myxomas are usually not cancerous, but they can still get in the way of blood flow and make it hard for the heart to work properly. There are other, less common tumors, like sarcomas, which are more serious and need fast treatment. Whether it’s a clot or a tumor, having something unexpected in the heart is always concerning. That’s why doctors use echocardiography - an ultrasound of the heart - to spot these problems early. It helps them see what’s going on and figure out the best way to take care of it! So what is this "ping-pong" ball in the video? This is a thrombus. 😱 NorVue #ultrasound #echocardiography #pocus #medicine
